Using Handmade Cushions is my Favorite Design Trick.
It is no secret that I think handmade cushions are amazing home accessories which should be used more often when undertaking home decorating projects. This is simply because they make the whole decorating experience so much easier. Cushions are particularly helpful for anybody who is not artistic or does not have a natural eye for colors and decorating.
That is not all. I have found that handmade cushions are also effective at sprucing up a room and giving it a new lease of life. Adding a few carefully chosen handmade cushions is a very affordable way to decorate virtually any room in the home or even a commercial, business environment.
Using these simple design accessories cannot be underestimated so it is not surprising that I make good use of handmade cushions. Adding a few of the right cushions to a room is most definitely one of my favorite methods to spruce up a tired lounge or bedroom.
Clients and friends often come to me only after they have tried to (unsuccessfully) achieve an attractive looking room after spending many hours and much cash on decorated their home. They don’t know what is wrong, all they know is that the room does not look comfortable. Sometimes they can’t quite put their finger on what is wrong – the room just does not look finished.
Normally, I don’t have to make many suggestions to help people to get their room to “sing”!
There are many aspects I look at first before deciding on what is needed, for example, I look at the style of furniture, flooring and curtaining. Often, all that is needed is a few carefully chosen home accessories (like handmade cushions). However, I may make a few other simple decorating suggestions, for example, changing the lamp shades or rugs.
Just adding a few designer cushions can change the whole focal point in a room. The impact is immediate, pleasing to the eye and always successful. The response from clients is always the same – they are always amazed at how the seemingly small addition of a few carefully chosen handmade cushions can change a room so dramatically.
As accessories, are not only to be used to support your aching back! Cushions definitely have another valuable use to help transform your home, give character to a specific area of your home and create a certain ambiance. In other words cushions can be used just for their sheer beauty or style.
Questions I ask before choosing handmade cushions for a room.
There is so much potential when adding handmade cushions to a room. There are many aspects to consider when adding handmade cushions to a room if you want the end result to look good. Here are a few points to consider:
- color scheme in the room. This will include the color of walls and wall paper, carpets or other floor covering?
- does the room get natural light or is most of the light from artificial lamps?
- what is the overall style of the room?
- what style of furniture is in the room? Is the furniture painted or varnished wood?
- does the room have curtains or blinds? Are the curtains or blinds made up in a plain or patterned fabric?
- what is the color and texture of the soft furnishings and lounge suite? In a bedroom this will be the color and wood of the headboard and wardrobe.
Normally, you will not have to go to much expense when buying attractive handmade cushions. Most prices are well within normal decorating budgets. There are, of course, many talented designers who produce limited edition designer cushions. These can be (but not always) more expensive than standard handmade cushions.

These types of handmade cushions, complete with a loving message, is just one of the examples of the type of cushion which you could give as a gift. But hey! Before you think that these types of sentimental messages is not for you then think again…there are other messages available not just the example which I have given here. You could opt for something a little less sentimental.
